The Land of Standing-Up Rocks

Did you watch The Dark Crystal as a child? Well if you did, the landscape of the Chiricahua National Monument might look familiar. (http://www.darkcrystal.com/encyclopedia_urru.php#valley)

Or at least it did to me (maybe I watched the movie a few too many times). It is very much like a fantasy realm, maybe something from Middle Earth. I can imagine the Orcs hiding in those crevasses.

Wouldn’t these formations make a great backdrop for a science fiction film?

I’ve never seen our children so in awe of anything. Even the Grand Canyon didn’t bring about the enthusiasm that our hike through Chiricahua did. I think Oliver expressed it best when he said, “This place is blowing my mind!”
